Trinidad and Tobago is heavily dependent on its oil and gas sector to support its economy and society. However, given the challenge of climate change, small economies of scale, and increased economic, social and environmental vulnerability, strategies are needed to ensure long-term sustainable development. A key aspect to be considered is the greater potential for the implementation of energy efficiency measurements, which would allow for energy security in the long term, a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and increased revenue and cost savings. In this report, the methodology of the Energy Efficiency Indicators Database (BIEE) is set out in chapter...
Presented at the CARISCIENCE 2019 “Caribbean Science and Innovation Meeting” Le Gosier, Guadeloupe, FWI. The study aims to highlight the behaviour of the sea state of the water mass surrounding the island. Access to this information should allow officials and investors to make a more conscious decision on the applicability of this green energy source. energy source. Key words: ocean, wave energy
Keywords: Dominica, Climate Change, Disaster Preparedness, Waste to Energy, adaptation policies and mechanisms, adaptation strategies, Adaptation Framework, national policies, Climate Change Policy
The call for urgent action to address climate change and develop more sustainable modes of energy delivery is generally recognized. It is also apparent that batteries, both in the transportation and the power sectors, need to play a predominant role if the global community is to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius. Simply put, nations’ efforts will focus largely on electrifying transportation systems to be supported by power systems that deliver low carbon energy, using a range of renewable technologies. Stationary batteries will play a critical role in not only providing direct energy services, but also in acting as...
Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report provides the international community with a global dashboard to register progress on the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7): ensuring universal energy access, doubling progress on energy efficiency, substantially increasing the share of renewable energy, and enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean and renewable energy by 2030. It assesses the progress made by each country on these targets and provides a snapshot of how far we are from achieving SDG7. The report is a joint effort of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), United Nations Statistics...
The electrification of health centers, schools, and other public institutions has been limited by the slow expansion of national grids, which has staggering consequences for economic growth, poverty reduction, and the accumulation of human capital. Off-grid solar solutions have enormous potential to address the problem, both in Sub-Saharan Africa and across the world, but simply purchasing and installing the units without providing for adequate maintenance is not effective. Installing stand-alone solar units and servicing them through long-term performance-based contracts can give public institutions the electricity service they need at a cost governments can afford.
In the last few years, IFC has prioritized an approach to creating bankable private sector infrastructure opportunities that is called Scaling focusing not on single asset development, but on a holistic approach that creates a pipeline of infrastructure projects. The essence of the Scaling approach is to develop a robust public-private partnership (PPP) model for a single deal and then replicate it. This spreads costs, enhances impact, and encourages programmatic, competitive tendering, with faster delivery and lower prices genuinely creating new markets. In some countries, this approach involved working with governments to design a process. In others, IFC has worked...
