Funding the Sun : New Paradigms for Financing Off-Grid Solar Companies

This report elucidates the role of financial innovation in the off-grid solar sector and provides a roadmap for practitioners, financiers, and entrepreneurs navigating capital raises for companies active in the sector. It examines a full range of established and frontier financing options. It illustrates that some technology-enabled financial innovations, such as peer-to-peer business lending, are already playing an important role in the sector. It was prepared by the World Bank Group and the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, with support from ESMAP.

Operation and Maintenance Strategies for Hydropower : Handbook for Practitioners and Decision Makers

This handbook seeks to raise awareness among utility managers, decision makers, and other stakeholders of the benefits of developing robust O&M strategies for all existing hydropower plants and those under development. Unlike many other forms of generation, the cost of implementing a robust O&M strategy for hydropower accounts for a relatively small percentage of the value of electricity generated. However, failure to implement adequate and sufficient O&M can result in very high costs due to increased losses of production (direct and indirect) and higher needs for rehabilitation and equipment replacement. Hence carrying out appropriate O&M strategies and related programs has...

Reuse and Recycling : Environmental Sustainability of Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage Systems

The call for urgent action to address climate change and develop more sustainable modes of energy delivery is generally recognized. It is also apparent that batteries, both in the transportation and the power sectors, need to play a predominant role if the global community is to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius. Simply put, nations’ efforts will focus largely on electrifying transportation systems to be supported by power systems that deliver low carbon energy, using a range of renewable technologies. Stationary batteries will play a critical role in not only providing direct energy services, but also in acting as...

Increasing Human Capital by Electrifying Health Centers and Schools through Off-Grid Solar Solutions

The electrification of health centers, schools, and other public institutions has been limited by the slow expansion of national grids, which has staggering consequences for economic growth, poverty reduction, and the accumulation of human capital. Off-grid solar solutions have enormous potential to address the problem, both in Sub-Saharan Africa and across the world, but simply purchasing and installing the units without providing for adequate maintenance is not effective. Installing stand-alone solar units and servicing them through long-term performance-based contracts can give public institutions the electricity service they need at a cost governments can afford.

Scaling Solar : The Complete Package

In the last few years, IFC has prioritized an approach to creating bankable private sector infrastructure opportunities that is called Scaling focusing not on single asset development, but on a holistic approach that creates a pipeline of infrastructure projects. The essence of the Scaling approach is to develop a robust public-private partnership (PPP) model for a single deal and then replicate it. This spreads costs, enhances impact, and encourages programmatic, competitive tendering, with faster delivery and lower prices genuinely creating new markets. In some countries, this approach involved working with governments to design a process. In others, IFC has worked...

The First Steps Towards The Realization Of Energy From Oceanic Waves In Jamaica

Presented at the CARISCIENCE 2019 “Caribbean Science and Innovation Meeting” Le Gosier, Guadeloupe, FWI. The study aims to highlight the behaviour of the sea state of the water mass surrounding the island. Access to this information should allow officials and investors to make a more conscious decision on the applicability of this green energy source. energy source. Key words: ocean, wave energy

A Sure Path to Sustainable Solar : Solar Deployment Guidelines

Achieving global goals for access to energy and mitigation of climate change will require a quadrupling of present levels of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation in the developing world by 2025 to reach around 950 gigawatt (GW)1. This represents an investment of more than US$500 billion in new solar PV generation alone. To reach this objective, large amounts of private funding will have to be unlocked to complement the limited public financing available. Yet most developing countries still lack a pipeline of bankable solar projects for consideration by the private sector. To develop one, countries must take a series of key...

Improving the Investment Climate for Renewable Energy Through Benefit Sharing, Risk Management, and Local Community Engagement

The report, a joint effort between the World Bank’s Social Development Global Practice and International Finance Corporation (IFC) advisory services, is based on the idea that local engagement, for example, through benefit sharing, is an important way for better risk management and creating a more enabling environment for renewable energy development. It finds that the underlying causes of the conflicts are diverse, complex, and dynamic: influencing factors include historical struggles over poverty and inequality, land ownership, mistrust in public and private institutions, a lack of free, prior and informed consultations (FPIC) before investment flows into the region and oftentimes a...

Compensation Devices to Support Grid Integration of Variable Renewable Energy

This technical guide is the second in a series of four technical guides on variable renewable energy (VRE) grid integration produced by the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) of the World Bank and the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP). It focuses on the main functionalities, differences and benefits of various compensation devices that can be employed to increase system transfer capacity, system stability, power quality and flexibility to cope with increasing penetrations of renewables in the system. The applications of FACTS devices are associated with four essential technical enhancements of system capacity, system reliability, power quality and system controllability....
